  Our Purpose  
 

The Sierra Leone Bar Association is the umbrella organisation of lawyers in Sierra Leone. It comprises of all the lawyers in Sierra Leone. It is the oldest Bar Association in Sub Saharan Africa. Its objects are as follows:

a. To support and protect the character, status and interest of the legal profession in Sierra Leone.

b. To concern itself with, promote and maintain professional standards, usage, etiquette and/or courtesy.

c. To advocate for the independence of the judiciary.

d. To consider and review all matters affecting the interest of the profession, and if necessary, to petition Parliament or promote deputation and to procure changes of law or practice, and the promotion of improvements in the administration of the law.

e. To originate, promote, oppose and campaign for improvements, amendments, reform and interpretation of the laws of Sierra Leone and to institute, prosecute, defend, support or oppose legal proceedings aimed at achieving the same.

f. To give to institutions and individuals, at its sole discretion, facilities for conferring with and ascertaining the views of persons engaged in the legal profession as regards matters directly or indirectly affecting the administration of justice.

g. To consider and discuss all questions affecting the interest of the community or the administration of the law in Sierra Leone and to support or oppose any measures affecting the same.

h. To provide information on legal subjects, including all matters affecting the legal profession, including lectures, discussions, books, law reports, magazines, periodicals, circulars, newsletters and other literary undertakings.

i. To organise and promote legal education.

j. To establish and maintain a library.

k. To establish and maintain a system of legal aid and advice.

l. To promote and support law reform and law revision.

m. To protect human rights and fundamental freedoms as defined by the United Nations in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the African Charter on Human and People's Rights, the Constitution of Sierra Leone and all other international treatises and Conventions to which Sierra Leone is a party and to submit reports, communications and other documents required under any of these treatises and Conventions.

n. To campaign for the ratification and/or enactment of international treatises and conventions.

o. To draft and submit bills to the legislature, the executive or other authority or body.

p. To provide facilities for the furtherance of good relationship between the members of the Bench, the legal profession and other members of society and to promote good relations and exchange of ideas between members of the Association as well as between the Association and similar Association within and without Sierra Leone.

q. To twin or enter into agreement with other Bar Associations or similar Associations.

r. To establish branches elsewhere in Sierra Leone and to make provision to regulate and discontinue the same.

s. To support and subscribe to any charitable or public object and any institution or society which may be for the benefit of the Company, its members or the Country as the Company may decide.
